My Delivery

Posted by: Kimmi

I thought I should document my delivery story somewhere for my sake, so here it is. Feel free to skip reading this post if you would like.

I started off the morning of the 11th thinking my water may have broken, but I wasn’t totally convinced (no big gush of water for me). So I finished my morning routine and headed off to work. I spent the work day concerned about my water, but I wasn’t having regular contractions and I still felt fine. I decided to wait for my non stress test appointment I had that afternoon and see what they had to say. But by 3:00 I was pretty sure that my water had indeed broken. The diagnostics center sent me straight to Labor and Delivery.

They quickly got me checked in, but I wasn’t seen until 4:30 because of how busy they were. Too many women tried to self induce to have their baby on 10-10-10 I guess. When I was finally seen, the midwife did a quick test to see if the liquid was amniotic fluid or not. It was! She also checked how dilated I was and I was actually at a two. During the check, she broke my already ruptured bag, and then I got that huge gush of water. Such a strange feeling! Luckily, I had called Mark minutes before the exam telling him that I was sure it was my water and to head up to the U. He was smart enough to be heading up anyway. He arrived a couple minutes later, and then we were then admitted and taken to our room.
The delivery room was really nice. Very homey and warm feeling. We both really liked the idea that we would stay in this room the duration of the delivery, and even better was the fact that Spencer would stay in the room as well. All his tests, stats and clean up would happen there within our sight.

Once settled, I received an IV and got pitocin going on a small drip. That was soon followed by an epidural (which is my new best friend). We tried to sleep though all the nurses, machines, monitors and noises, but not very successfully. At about 11:30 I was checked for the first time since admission. I was dilated to a 4 ½ and effacing steadily. The resident was happy with my progression, upped my pitocin, and asked that we try to get some rest.

I was checked again at 2:00 am and to everyone’s surprise I was fully dilated and fully effaced. The resident announced it was time to push! Talk about unexpected!! He went to update Dr. Sharp (who is my OB and thankfully was the doctor on call that night), then came back and got me started. After 2 ½ hours of pushing, Spencer joined our little world!
Spencer Neeley Dibb was born on October 12, 2010 at 4:52 am. He was measured at 20 ½ inches and weighed in at 7 lbs and 1 oz. He has those strong Dibb genes. He has big feet and big hands. He is long and lanky just like his dad. He even has Mark’s swirl cowlick on the crown of his head. Love it!

Thanks to all the friends and family who have visited us at the hospital and at home. Thanks to those who have brought meals and treats and of course, support and advice for the new parents!

We have loved having Spencer in our home. He is a wonderful baby and absolutely adorable to look at! Mark and I have decided that we will keep him!
