What the What!

posted by Mark:

So I walked out of my front door on Saturday to do a few odds and ends around the house and this sucker was sitting on the side of my house! It was huge to say the least and it sat there most of the morning.

This dragonfly did reminded me of a memory from my youth. As I've mentioned a few times before my grandparents have a home up in Midway and it has a rather large yard. As a kid growing up we'd go up to Midway often during the summer. This large yard led me to have many fun adventures. Night games, riding around on the mini 50cc four wheeler that my dad bought us and we drove for YEARS until it finally gave up the ghost, catching lots of gardener snakes, playing in the creek, ect.

I must have been bored one day, but I noticed that there were a lot of blue dragonflies flying around the yard and decided I was in charge of doing something about it. I grabbed one of those large red plastic baseball bats and went on a summer long rampage chasing down and killing violently any dragonfly that crossed my path..... As a kid you don't really perceive the impact activities of this nature have on an ecosystem but I am quite positive I DECIMATED the dragonfly population for many years to come. I say that because I recall noticing a steep decline of dragonfly sightings. Whether or not since the days of the Midway Massacre the dragonfly population ever did regain a foothold in the area I can't really say. But I can say that over the years I have gained a greater appreciation for these freaky looking bugs.

Anyway I guess I'm not only sharing this experience for your humor and enjoyment but it leaves just one more warning to prepare my good wife for the future and inevitable hellion that will be our sons early youth. Sorry wife...love love
